Selections from the Collection: Unexpected Discoveries

October 24 - December 16, 2015
Cohen Resource Room

Selections from the Collection: Unexpected Discoveries is a collaborative project between the H&R Block Artspace and the Kansas City Art Institute course, Introduction to Museum Studies. Students in the course selected an object from the Kansas City Art Institute Fine Art Collection, and conducted original research on the artist, object, and history of the work within the collection. This project exposed students to the many aspects of museum work including object-based research, label writing, editing, museum registration, exhibit design, and installation. Their diverse opinions and interests are reflected in their chosen objects and individual texts, while their group discussions and interactions shaped the exhibition you see before you. This exhibition represents the collected voices and visions of the seven students in the class, and reveals the unique, heterogeneous nature of the KCAI Fine Art Collection.

"Devil’s Promenade", created by Shipley and Antone Dolezal, explores the distinct mix of folklore, superstition, and history that shapes Ozark culture in certain rural communities in southern Missouri.

Lara Shipley is from rural Missouri and currently lives in Kansas City, MO, where she teaches photography at Kansas City Art Institute. She is a photographer, writer and bookmaker who primarily makes work about people and their relationships with the out-of-the-way places they call home. She is the founder of the photography book publisher SEARCH PARTY, and recently released a series of books, Spook Light Chronicles, with collaborator Antone Dolezal.

A portfolio from Devil's Promenade is in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photograph in Chicago.
